Important Events:
Get the job at Thornfield Hall, leaves Lowood
Meets Adele and Mrs. Fairfax
Meets Mr. Rochester, interviews her, he was Adeles mothers lover, someone set fire to his bed Jane saves him
Mr. Mason gets stabbed and bitten
Mr. Rochester says he is going to marry Miss Ingram

Important Passages:
” The last sound I expected to hear in so still a region, a laugh, struck my ears. It was a curious laugh – distinct, formal, mirthless.” (110)
“ I knew you would do me good in some way, at sometime: I saw it in your eyes when I first beheld you: their expression and smile did not … strike delight to my very inmost heart so for nothing.” (158)

Focus Questions:
(Discuss all of the questions below. Record your discussion/answer for at least two prompts/questions.)

1. Jane is the governess at Thornfield Hall. Adele is Jane pupils. Adele is materialistic and is an attention seeker. Jane enjoys her job.

7. Independent – Her hard childhood forced her into looking after herself. She is willing to do whatever is best for herself.
Compassionate – She sympathizes with both Adele and Mr. Rochester. With Adele because she can relate to Adele’s lonely childhood. She understands Mr. Rochester and his character.

Important Events:

•Jane finds that Mrs. Fairfax is not the head of the estate
•Meets stranger on walk after he falls off horse
•Jane meets Mr. Rochester (the stranger from earlier)
•Mr. Rochester tells Jane about Adele’s mother
•Mr. Rochester is saved from burning to death by Jane but lies about cause of fire to the other servants
•Mr. Rochester invites guests to stay at Thornfield
•Jane believes Blanche and Mr. Rochester to be courting and is devastated
•Mr. Rochester’s old friend Mr. Mason arrives suddenly
•Mr. Mason gets stabbed in the middle of the night and Jane cares for him (though may not speak to him) while Mr. Rochester brings a doctor

Important Passages:

•One night after being in the drawing room with the party of guests, Mr. Rochester and Jane talk and as they part Mr. Rochester says, “Good-night my-“ before biting his lip.
•“…I felt he had not given her his love, and that her qualifications were ill-adapted to win from him that treasure.” (195)

Focus Questions:

1. Jane is a governess at Thornfield Hall and teaches Adele who is in the care of Mr. Rochester. Jane’s job is unchallenging for her and is not different from her previous one at Lowood. Jane just teaches all day and spends the rest of the time as she pleases. Adele is sweet but is spoiled and doesn’t have a long attention span. Jane feels affection for Adele, but is not drawn to her personality.

6. No, I do not think Mr. Rochester is in love with Blanche. The story line would not suit this choice and it doesn’t appear that they feel true affection for each other. Jane does not believe that Mr. Rochester would marry for status and rank because that would be uncharacteristic of him.

-She realizes that she is in love.
-Mr. Rochester brings home some guests.
-She confesses her love to the gypsy who is Mr. Rochester.
-She helps Mason in the middle of the night.

Important Passages:

”The fire shone full on his face. I knew my traveler, with his broad and jetty eyebrows, his square forehead, made squarer by the horizontal sweep of his black hair. I recognized his decisive nose, more remarkable for character than beauty; his full nostrils, denoting, I thought, choler; his grim mouth, chin, and jaw—yes, all three were very grim, and no mistake”(124).

“And in his great dark eyes; for he had great dark eyes, and very fine eyes, too—not without a certain change in their depths sometimes, which; if it was not of softness, reminded you, at least, of that feeling”(136).

Focus Questions:

1. Discuss Jane’s position at Thornfield Hall. What do you think of her job and of her new pupil?

She likes Adéle and thinks that this is a pretty good job, but not much more than that.

6. Do you think Rochester is in love with Blanche Ingram? Do you think he has any feelings for Jane?

We think that Rochester enjoys the attention that Blanche gives him, but he has been a rich man his whole life and has been around many flattering women like Blanche who want his money, and so he is kind of immune to her charms. However, Jane, with her brutal honesty, is so unlike anyone else he has ever known, that he finds himself fascinated by her.

Important Events:
- arrives at the Fairfax's
- meets Rochester
- saves Rochester's life
- hints towards love between Rochester & Jane
- Rochester might marry Blanche
- Meets a gypsy who is secretly Rochester

Important Passages:
- "Go, then, Jane; go!"
"But he still retained my hand, andI could not free it."

This shows that Jane and Rochester are starting to fall in love.

- "Mrs. Reed had never sent for me to Gateshead; neighter she nor any of her family have ever been to visit me. I had had no communication by letter, or messasge with the outer world."

This shows that Jane is still thinking about the Reed's even though she said she did not want to talk to them.

Questions:
7. Jane is independent and intellegent. She is independent because she has her own job and doesn't depend on family to help her. She is intellegent because she is a teacher and went through 8 years of education.

6. Rochester is not in love with Blanche Ingram, even though they spend a lot of time together. It is ovious that he has strong feelings for Jane, as she does for him.

“Strange that [Mr. Rochester] should choose [Jane] for a confidant!” p. 149

Focus Questions:
(Discuss all of the questions below. Record your discussion/answer for at least two prompts/questions.)

1. Discuss Jane’s position at Thornfield Hall. What do you think of her job and of her new pupil?
Jane’s position seems to be a very fortunate one for her to attain, as she started out from a young, unsupported child. Her job seems to be very comfortable and simple, and her pupil, Adele, is a sweet young girl, if a little over-energetic.

6. Do you think Rochester is in love with Blanche Ingram? Do you think he has any feelings for Jane?
As a group, we do not think Rochester is in love with Ingram, for Jane even states that she notices Ingram cannot charm him. However, we do believe Rochester will marry Ingram due to their wealth and status.
As a group, we KNOW Mr. Rochester is in love with Jane, simply by the way he acts and speaks to her when she least expects it. However, Rochester knows he cannot truly commit to these feelings because he and Jane are on opposite ends of society.
